Goliath birdeater (Theraphosa blondi) is the world’s largest spider by mass native to the rainforests of northern South America with a leg span up to 12 inches and a body the size of a fist though it rarely eats birds, preferring insects, frogs, and small mammals. It’s a nocturnal burrow dwelling tarantula known for its hairy body which includes urticating (stinging) hairs for defense and large fangs that deliver a venom comparable to a wasp sting, making its hairs a greater threat. #goliathbird
