It is true that flea and tick shampoos only kill live bugs and do not treat the life cycle. And yes it is dangerous to use flea shampoo in conjunction with topical drops or any other treatment. But to make matters worse, the chemicals in ALL of the over the counter flea products are posionious and lethal. Do not use over the counter flea products.

With Flea/Tick medications the spot on type some kill and others repel AND kill. Due to heavy tick population where I live, I want it to repel AND kill. Kill only meds the tick/flea must bite the dog to die. Repel and kill meds do the same thing but also keep pests from biting be repelling. I change what I use every other year.

I use sulfur and neem oil based products, which seems to kill fleas and many parasites. Almost everybody I know in central florida seems to be using frontline or comforits, in which I would use comforits. comforits and a tick collar combination seems what a lot of people like.

Ticks have to stay on dog for a few hours to infect , and , the flea/tick meds will kill the tick before this happens. Best way to remove a tick: Soak a cotton ball with liquid dish detergent ( Dawn ) and place on tick so that the liquid covers the tick , wait 30 or 40 seconds press down lightly and wipe away and tick will be in cotton ball.
